64th Oi Tournament

The round-robin round of 64th Oi Tournament is in progress. The tournament firstly starts from preliminary round to decide players who join the next round-robin round, where 12 players are separated into two groups (red and white). The winner from the each group will play the final match to decide the challenger to the previous year’s champion; currently Sota Fujii has the crown. The preliminary round starts from July to January, and the round-robin round starts from January to June. Then title match games are held from July to September.

In the red group, Toyoshima is the top runner so far, but considering that Habu plays only one game, it is not clear who will gain the right to proceed to the final. Tokuda is the focus of public attention, because his rate of winning exceeds 75% even this is his rookie year. However, Tokuda seems to struggle to manage game against veterans like Toyoshima and Nagase.
In the white group, Akira Watanabe won 2 games in row. He most likely win the race. If there is someone who stops him, I think it will be Daichi Sasaki. Sasaki has never gain crowns, but he often defeat stronger player. I hope he will become a dark horse to make the tournament interesting.
