Double Wing Attack, Joseki

Double Wing Attack

Double Wing Attack is a Joseki when both players choose static rook but don’t open bishop lines. The definition of the Double Wing Attack is vague, this article introduces basic strategy of the opening.

1. ▲P-26
2. △P-84
3. ▲P-25
4. △P-85
5. ▲G-78
6. △G-32
Both player proceed pawns in the rook’s file without opening the bishop line.Once the opponent’s pawn comes 5th rank, it is important to protect the 8th file (or 2nd file if you are white) with gold.

7. ▲P-24
8. △Px24
9. ▲Rx24
10. △P*23
11. ▲R-28
12. △P-86
13. ▲Px86
14. △Rx86
15. ▲P*87
16. △R-84
After sente (black) exchange pawns at 24, there are several options to withdraw its rook. Popular positions are 28 or 26, but 25 and 27 are also possible. 28 is considered as offensive position. In this case, the opponent may withdraw its rook at 84, where rook can defense the 4th rank.

17. ▲S-38
18. △S-62
19. ▲S-27
20. △P-34
21. ▲S-36
Once each player decide the rook position, sente deploy right silver to battle front. Like other static rook opening, there are three major options: Climbing Silver, Reclining Silver and Rapid Advancing Silver. This article explains an example of the climbing silver. The right silver advances like ▲S-38 > ▲S-27 > ▲S-36. If you are the white side, it is important to push the 3rd file pawn once you recognize the black side’s climbing silver strategy. If it delays, you cannot protect the 2nd file.

22. △B-33
23. ▲P-76
24. △S-22
25. ▲K-69
26. △K-31
27. ▲G-58
28. △G-52
29. ▲P-66
30. △P-54
31. ▲S-68
The white side makes castle with preparing for the climbing silver. After checking △B-33, black side close the bishop line by ▲P-66, which is aiming to develop Yagura castle. Because white already put its bishop at 33, the player is difficult to make Yagura castle. At this moment, full-scale battle has not begun yet, but there are several tactics behind the each move.
